Walk so silently that the bottom of your feet become ears.“ — Inspiriert vom Geist Pauline Oliveros‘ vereint Feet Become Ears eine neue Generation von Komponist:innen und Musiker:innen, die erforschen, wie und wo wir hören und welche Erwartungen wir an zeitgenössische Musik haben. Verwurzelt in Minimalismus und Postminimalismus baut das Kollektiv auf Errungenschaften der amerikanischen Avantgarde auf und schafft Raum für offenes, neugieriges und verbindendes Hören. 2025 kehrt Feet Become Ears mit einer neuen Saison ausschließlich in Leipzig zurück. In drei Konzerten begegnen sich jeweils ein:e Solokünstler:in und ein Ensemble.
Sjaella, das Leipziger Vokalsextett, ist bekannt für seine fantasievolle und grenzüberschreitende Herangehensweise an Vokalmusik. Seit 2005 aufgestellt, ist Sjaella weltweit auf großen Festivals präsent und vielfach preisgekrönt. Ihr Repertoire entsteht in enger Zusammenarbeit mit internationalen Komponist:innen und reicht von früher Barockmusik bis zu zeitgenössischem Minimalismus, gefeiert etwa auf „Origins“ (CARA Award USA). Das Ensemble gestaltet innovative Bühnen- und interdisziplinäre Projekte, zuletzt etwa Michel van der Aas VR-Oper „From Dust“ und größere Kooperationen mit der Oper Leipzig. Jüngster Fokus ist die Kammeroper „Primero Sueño“, die 2025 in den Met Cloisters New York uraufgeführt wird.
Liam Byrne ist ein vielseitiger Gambist, der für seine Projekte zwischen Alter und Neuer Musik bekannt ist. In Berlin lebend tritt er als Solist und Kammermusiker gemeinsam mit Partnern wie dem Lautenisten Jonas Nordberg und dem Ensemble Continuum auf. Als ehemaliges Mitglied von Phantasm und Fretwork hat er mit Komponisten wie Nico Muhly und David Lang sowie Künstler:innen aus Elektronik, Folk und Pop gearbeitet. Sein Schaffen umfasst Konzerte, Aufnahmen, Installationen sowie sein Debütalbum auf Bedroom Community. 2024 erhielt er das Glenn Gould Bach Fellowship für seine innovative Forschung zu englischer Lyra-Viol-Musik.

Walk so silently that the bottom of your feet become ears.” — Inspired by the boundary-pushing spirit of Pauline Oliveros, Feet Become Ears brings together a new generation of composers and musicians committed to exploring how we listen, where we listen, and what we expect from contemporary music. Rooted in minimalism and postminimalism, the collective builds on the legacy of the American avant-garde and creates space for listening practices grounded in openness, curiosity, and connection. In 2025, Feet Become Ears returns with a new season taking place exclusively in Leipzig. Across three evenings, each concert pairs a solo artist with an ensemble, creating juxtapositions of intimate expression and collaborative sound.
Sjaella, the Leipzig-based vocal sextet, is recognized for their devoted ensemble spirit and boundary-crossing programming. Here, their pure, intertwined voices are set amid the spacious acoustics of the Philippuskirche, bringing contemporary a cappella to vibrant life. Rather than looking to early music, Sjaella’s focus lies on present-day repertoire—a spectrum of shifting harmonies and new vocal colors.
Alongside, Liam Byrne reinvents the viola da gamba for the 21st century. His performances, rooted in experimental approaches, draw out the resonant depths and surprising lyricism of the instrument, exploring new works that rethink the language of strings and song.
Liam Byrne is a versatile viola da gamba player known for his boundary-crossing projects between early and contemporary music. Based in Berlin, he appears as a soloist and chamber musician with partners like lutenist Jonas Nordberg and Ensemble Continuum. A former member of ensembles such as Phantasm and Fretwork, Liam has also collaborated with composers including Nico Muhly and David Lang, as well as artists from electronic, folk, and pop genres.
